It is a type of XUL ( Extra Ultra Light) angling that uses ultra-light spinning rods, ultra-thin lines and the smallest artificial lures, often weighing less than one gram. Although spearfishing is traditionally associated with predators, it is primarily a technique for catching peaceful (white) fish.
The most common catches are roach, bream and, in rivers, gillnets. Of course, perch, bream, chub, bream or gudgeon are also regular companions of the angler. It is a very fun and active way of fishing, which is quickly embraced by beginners and experienced anglers alike, who want to enjoy abundant catches throughout the season.
For this technique, a lightweight XUL-type spinning rod is used, with a maximum casting test usually below 2g. Many experienced anglers say that the optimum weight for such gear is up to 1.5g. However, for the beginner angler, one quality rod can be perfect for both sheepshead and nano jig techniques, as these techniques are often intertwined.
When choosing a rod, it is important to remember: the manufacturer's casting test is important, but focus on the upper limit, as it best reflects the actual fishing situation.
The length of the spinning rod is an individual choice, usually ranging from 1.6m to 2.5m. Shorter gear is lighter and more sensitive, while longer gear allows for more comfortable handling of the lure and more effective harassment of the fish, especially when using extremely thin lines. If you are looking for a tool for pure sheepshead fishing, we recommend the shorter models, around 1.7m in length.
While monofilament lines used to be popular, braided lines are now the clear leader. It is thinner, more durable and offers maximum sensitivity, which is critical when working with micro baits.
Very thin braided lines, #0.1 PE - #0.2 PE, are commonly used. Products from popular brands such as DUEL, YGK, Gosen, Toray and Yamatoyo have a proven track record among anglers.
There is one basic rule: the reel must be extremely light, but not at the expense of quality. Small reels in the 1000-2000 size range are best, ensuring a smooth casting action.
Heavy gear not only reduces fishing comfort but also inhibits the overall sensitivity of the system. Reels weighing up to 170g are the best choice. Bearking or Iron Wolf offer excellent value for money, while for the top end we recommend Shimano Miravel, Vanford or Vanquish.
Micro lures are usually between 1 cm and 4 cm long. The most popular are silicone lures about 2.5 cm long, which imitate various larvae (e.g. mosquito burst).
These lures are armed with:
Very light headhooks or oats (0.3g - 2g).
Small and sharp hooks (#14 - #10 size).
tungsten "cheburashkas" (0.5g - 2g).
There is no strict boundary between these techniques. Oatcatching usually involves fishing with weights up to 1.5g, where the oatmeal is finely shaken ("jigged") in the middle layers of the water. Nano-jigging uses weights up to 3g and is more often based on classic jigging closer to the bottom, with more active reel work. Both methods often use the same gear, so it all depends on your personal comfort and the mood of the fish that day.
1. Are Lithuanian lures really the best for sheepshead? No. This is a myth created by advertising. Most of the so called "Lithuanian" lures are just copies of Ukrainian or Russian lures. Their price is often unreasonably high and their quality is nothing different from market standards. Their only advantage is aggressive marketing.
2. What is the best economy-grade fishing rod for sheepfishing? In our expert opinion, the current market leader in this category is unambiguously Akara Estetic. In terms of completeness, quality and adaptability to this technique, it is far ahead of the popular Aliexpress or Mifine rods, although the price is practically the same.
3. Is the Varivas Light Game the best line for sheepshead fishing? Not necessarily. In our experience, this line is a bit pasty and even a 0.2 PE pattern may be too thick for a real sheepshead. It is much more suitable for standard UL (Ultra Light) spinning.
We are not just salesmen - we are passionate fans of air reels ourselves, so we test all our equipment live. Based on personal experience, we can confidently advise you on what really works on the water.
I personally fish with an Akara Estetic spinning rod, on which I wrap a super thin and sensitive Duel The One 0.1 PE braided line. A Shimano Vanford 2000 reel is the perfect match for this lightweight set-up. Meanwhile, my colleague Sandra uses a more economical, but perfectly suited to the specifics of sheepshead fishing, Bearking Athena III reel. Both kits allow you to enjoy the process to the maximum!
Where to try out air reefing in Kaunas?
We highly recommend Kaunas residents (and visitors) to start their spring fishing in the Kaunas Lagoon, especially when fishing from the harbour quays. Oystercatchers work wonders there! This is where the big boars come to feed in the spring, where you can always have fun catching perch, and, of course, it's a great way to catch the invasive grundulus.
You can see and buy all the equipment you need for successful fishing in our physical shop at Pramonės pr. 41a, Kaunas. We also invite you to shop conveniently online at azukle.lt - here you will always find a large assortment, competitive prices and great promotions on spinning rods, reels, lines and lures!
