Winter hats

A hat is an essential accessory for a fisherman's outfit, especially when fishing in the cold season, on a windy autumn day or on ice in winter. Winter fishing hats come in many different types and it is not easy to choose the best ones. Some fishermen appreciate very warm winter fishing hats that do not require a hood, while others prefer hats with a spout and a scarf together. Others appreciate comfort and prefer the simplest of tight-fitting hats, with a suit hood if necessary. Manufacturers also produce winter hats with built-in led lights to provide a little light after dark without having to carry a flashlight for night fishermen. As many types of hats as there are, there are just as many materials from which hats are made. The lowest price is for plain cotton or fleece fitted caps. Flysheet hats are slightly less warm than cotton hats, but are more suitable if the fisherman is very active and sweats profusely. However, the head is certainly not a part of the body that sweats a lot when fishing, so it is not so important to choose a hat that is as breathable as possible. Merino wool caps are usually made quite thin and are worn more as an extra hat under a beanie in winter. This combination of two hats protects the eyes from the sun, snow or rain with the help of the spout, while the merino cap provides warmth. There are also a number of warm winter hats already available with a spout. Savage Gear and Keitech make very good and inexpensive hats. The more expensive caps are made of Polartec material. The high quality new generation Polartec fabric is very light and pleasant to wear and offers excellent wind protection. The most expensive caps are very warm caps with an outer membrane. They not only protect against the cold, but also against rain, but such hats are not very popular because our winters are quite mild and you can always wear a hood in case of precipitation. You probably won't find a winter suit without a hood.

Which hats do we recommend?

Probably the most popular inexpensive hats are the Norfin Fleece fitted caps. These are traditional hats that are fully sufficient for our winters. If you're looking for a thin merino wool cap, there's no better offer than the Lithuanian Thermowave company. The most popular beanies with a spout are, as we mentioned, the Keitech winter beanie with a spout, as well as the Savage Gear Polar Winter, and a particularly popular beanie is the SG Knitted Beanie. It is really warm, covers the ears well and has a spout to protect against precipitation or sunlight. FHM makes some very cool softshell hats. They fit well around the ears and keep the wind out. This is the FHM Stream model, which has a fleece inside and a softshell fabric on the outside for light precipitation and wind resistance. You can also buy hats with your favourite brand logos online. These include hats from Guru, Preston, Shimano and other well-known fishing brands. Do you like to decorate and want a cap with a bobble? A really good quality beanie with a bobble is the Tornado beanie from Norfin.

How do I choose the right hat?

Fishermen usually choose their hats based on functionality, not on the colour or the look of the hat. If a fisherman does not like wearing a hood, it is best to choose a waterproof hat with a spout. The spout will prevent precipitation from falling on the face and the waterproof material will protect the head from moisture.

For fishermen who move around a lot, it is recommended to wear synthetic hats made of fleece or polartec material. They evaporate sweat very well and will protect your hair from moisture. A wet head on a cold and windy day is very dangerous for your health. It is better to have frozen your hands or feet, but not your head.

If you are fishing in very extreme conditions or if you have problems with your throat or ears, you should opt for a beanie hat. This is a hat combined with a mask and scarf, also known as a helmet. This type of hat will protect not only your head from extreme cold, but also your ears and neck. There is also the option of wearing a balaclava, which is a thin material undercoat, just underneath a basic hat. It will not restrict movement, will fit easily under any suit collar and hat and will certainly provide a lot of extra protection.
