Fish baits are used to catch all peaceful fish. The purpose of the lures is to attract the fish to the bait point where your bait lies on the hook. The bait industry has expanded considerably and there are now almost 20 different manufacturers to choose from online in Lithuania. Baits are usually packaged in 1kg, 2kg, 2.5kg and 5kg. Sportsmen divide baits one way, amateurs a little differently. Let's talk about that. For the sportsman, the bait is either salty or sweet to taste. Fish baits are light or heavy, active or passive. In terms of quality, they are either well or poorly absorbent, and with a lot or little unnecessary impurities or debris. In terms of colour, bright, light or dark. Odour is more of a secondary consideration. The amateur distinguishes between baits by label - i.e. which fish or fishing method is indicated, by texture - coarse or fine. By colour - yellow, red, green or black. If it says bait for bream, carp, crucian carp, you would expect to catch that too, which is a rather dubious way of choosing baits. Of course, without a lot of knowledge and experience, it is better than taking anything, but on a more serious note, baits need to be matched not only to the target catch but also to the water temperature, depth, bottom and the disposition of the fish.
Baits for fish. What does their price depend on?
The price of baits depends on many things, and yes, you are right, brand pricing is not the least of them, not just cost price. Bait can cost between EUR 2.5 and EUR 8 per kilo. The cheapest baits for fish at the moment are certainly not of the highest quality and do not come close to the expensive quality baits, but that does not mean that a bait costing EUR 6 will be better than a bait costing EUR 4 and that you will catch more fish with it. Recently, the prices of Polish baits have risen significantly. Quality Polish fish baits already cost EUR 6 per kilo, while Belgian baits cost EUR 4 or EUR 5. It should be noted here that the rise in the price of Polish baits has not made them any more qualitative. No wonder that their popularity is declining and the shelves of Lithuanian fishing shops are full of VDE and Champion Feed Belgian baits. By the way, they are also the most appreciated by sport fishermen.
Fish bait. Which one to choose?
It is a rule that darker baits are used for smaller fish and lighter and brighter colours for larger fish. This is because large fish are not afraid to get above a light coloured spot, as they are of little danger to our predators. On the other hand, smaller fish are potential victims of pike or sturgeon and try not to stand out from their surroundings. The theory that darker baits work better in colder water is also often true. The taste of the bait also influences the bite and the colder the water, the more often saltier baits are used. However, it should again be noted that sweeter baits work well in the winter when catching large fish. For ice fishing, special baits are available that have already been wetted, which is a good choice for the amateur who does not want to get his hands wet and cold when ice fishing. Winter baits are usually sold in 0.5kg packs, so that you can use it all up when you open the pack. Because in winter you don't really need much bait.
So which is the best bait after all? Champion Feed Wonder Yellow has been the most popular bait for the last three years without any competition. It's hard to say whether it's the best, but for bream fishing in July and August, there's probably no better choice. Is there a cheaper bait available? Baits are cheaper to buy in a physical shop, as the high weight of baits makes them expensive to ship.
