We have waited a long time, too long, for the Shimano company to decide that fiddlers also deserve good and reliable reels. The Shimano Aero XR is the first of a range of fader reels promising 3 different models. The Aero XR is so far available in 3 sizes: the C3000 for pickerel, the 4000 for lightweight fiddlers between 3.3m and 3.6m and the C5000 for medium fiddlers up to 90g. For powerful distance fiddlers, unfortunately the right size has not been produced yet. The first question when you pick up the reel is on which spinning reel base is this reel made? It seems that so far none. Shimano has made a new model rather than putting a fader clip on a spinning reel and adding an extra drum. So far there is no equivalent for this reel. What was a pleasant surprise was the CI4+ body and rotor. The lightness of the reel is surprising when you pick it up. The C3000 model weighs just 210g and the C5000 only 255g. There is no lighter fader reel of this size on the market. Does light weight reduce the durability of the reel? The answer is yes, but not for Shimano reels. The luxurious CI4+ housing used by Shimano is as durable as aluminium and has been proving to all the sceptics for 10 years that Shimano's reels last a very long time, no matter what the weight. The second nice point is the very smooth operation of the reel. It turns very easily and smoothly. Also no lifts, everything is perfectly aligned. The Aero CR also has a luxurious one-piece guide-cleaning hoop. Like all the more expensive spinning reels, it already has the C-Protect water protection system and a knob that screws directly into the axle. As befits a feeder reel, the larger models are available in 4.7:1 - a powerful ratio. A spare aluminium reel and reel seeder are included if you use braided line.
