Lines

Sea boat

In principle, nautical lines are no different from conventional lines. In fact, all the labels that say it is a saltwater boat are marketing gimmicks. No manufacturer has invented a more suitable material for braided or monofilament line that is more suitable for saltwater. A saltwater line is usually just a thick line. A monofilament line can be either monofilament or braided. Monofilament lines are more commonly used for trolling and have very thick diameters. When trolling for salmon at sea, a monofilament line with a thickness of about 0.4 mm is commonly used. It is sold in large rolls of 1000, 3000 or 5000 metres. For particularly large predators such as sharks, tuna, marlin or swordfish, monofilament lines are also used, but much thicker than 1mm. Thick monofilament line is the most reliable helper in the fight against sea monsters weighing more than 100 kg, because, unlike braided line, it has shock absorption and helps to absorb the fish's impact and distress. A rod and reel alone is not enough to harass such predators, the line must also provide shock absorption. There would be nothing with a braided whale. Either the reel, the rod or the angler would not be able to cope.

Braided lines are used in sea fishing for smaller or slower catches such as cod, halibut and similar fish. They are preferred in the northern seas. Fishing with braided lines does not require very large reels, as, say, a monofilament line for halibut would need a line no thinner than 0,8 mm, and you can't get much of that line in a simple multiplier. Therefore, if you don't want to use a 1 kg reel, you have to use braided line. The most popular braided lines for fishing in Norway are around 0.3mm thick.
