Oyster fishing is a type of XUL angling that uses very light tackle and very small weights and the smallest artificial lures. This type of angling is special because the target is usually white (peaceful) fish rather than predatory fish. The most common catch in this type of angling is the roach in still water, while in rivers in spring and autumn, gillnets are a good target. The most coveted catch of the angler is probably the bream, which is a lot of fun to catch. Of course, the smallest baits are also used for perch, bream, chub, bream or pugfish.

XUL spinning rod for sheepshead

The most basic XUL spinning rod is used for sheepshead, with casting tests up to max 3g. Although most experienced anglers would say that the jig should be up to 1.5g, 3g is a nano jig. It is hard to argue with that, but for a beginner angler, a single spinning rod will suffice for both techniques, which are all intertwined and it is difficult to know where the line is between them. What should be the lower limit of the casting test, you ask? This is not important because the manufacturer's label is just a number that is not measured in any way, so it is better to be guided by looking at the upper limit. It is more likely to be true than the lower limit, we can guarantee that.

The length of the spinning rod is also debatable, some people are fine with a longer one, others with a shorter one, but one way or the other, 1.7m-2.2m spinning rods dominate the choice of XUL anglers. The shorter the rod, the lighter and more sensitive it will be, but the longer the rod, the easier it will be to control the bait and the better it will absorb the fish's strikes, which is very important when fishing with very thin walleyes.

The reel for sheepshead /XUL

The reel used for sheepshead and nano jigs is usually braided. The mono line has been tested for several years by seasoned enthusiasts, but the overwhelming majority still prefer the braided line. Thickness of the line is simple, the thinner the more fun and effective the fishing. #0.1PE-#0.2Pe, the most popular line thicknesses for oat fishing. And not just any. Let's say the very popular Varivas Light Game 0.2Pe is much too thick for fishing with 0.5g oats. It is thicker and more suited to nano jigs than to oatgrass. The most successful lines are DUEL, YGK, Gosen, Toray, Intech.

Reel for sheepshead /XUL/ Nano Jig

The reel for a jig must meet two criteria, the first is to be as light as possible but not at the expense of size. Small 500 reels are very slow to pick up the line and the line slides harder on a small reel. So reels are best in the 1000-2000 size range and should weigh no more than 170g. Heavier reels will add considerably to the overall weight of the gear and will not help the full enjoyment of the fishing experience, and may even hinder bait retrieval. The second criterion is that the reel should be able to cope with a thin braided reel. In the past, such reels cost a lot and you could only buy a lightweight reel for well over EUR 100, but now EUR 60 or 70 is enough to buy a proper reel. Excellent economical reels are made by Bearking, Iron Wolf, and more luxurious ones are Shimano Miravel, Vanford or Vanquish.

Artificial lures for sheepshead / nano jig

The smallest lures used for sheepshead or nano jigs are 1-4cm. The most popular size is probably the 2.5cm long silicone lures, which usually imitate various maggots. Artificial mosquito larvae are also often used as bait. As a weight, a very small and lightweight head-hook is usually used, which resembles a winter oat, or is a winter oat. Their weight ranges from 0,3 to 2g. It is also popular to use the smallest single-pointed hooks in sizes #14-#10 and the lightest tungsten sinkers in the range of 0.5-2g.

What is the difference between a sheepshead reel and an XUL/Nano jig?

Finally, what is the difference between an air jig and a nano jig? As we mentioned the limit is not that high, it's just that the oyster reel is used for spinning when the weight is no more than 1.5g and the oats are fished by shaking the oats in the middle layer of water. Nano jigging is usually defined as spinning with a max weight of 3g and fishing simply by jigging at or near the bottom with more of the reel, rather than jigging the rod and lure at the same time. Realistically, there is nothing to stop you from fishing both ways with the same gear without making too much of it. After all, fishing is not an exact science, it is about having fun, excitement, improvement and moments of joy when the catch is hooked.
