3-layer Toray Derzimax membrane
Fishing trousers can be made of different materials and for different purposes. Winter trousers are designed to protect the fisherman from cold and snow, while membrane fishing trousers are designed to protect the fisherman from wind and rain. Lightweight summer trousers are designed to protect the fisherman from the hot sun and uv rays. There are also special trousers with mosquito protection or just casual trousers for when it is too cold to fish with shorts. There are also wading trousers for wading in the water.
Winter trousers usually have an outer membrane, which is responsible for keeping precipitation out and sweat out. It is very important to make sure that winter trousers are breathable, as unbreathable warm trousers are not comfortable. The sweat that accumulates will dampen your underwear and if you stop moving, you can get cold very quickly. For winter trousers, as for suits, if you only use them in sub-zero temperatures, good waterproofing is not essential, as it does not rain heavily in winter and a thick garment, even if the membrane gets a bit wet, will not fully wick the water up to the underwear for a long time. So a waterproofness of 8,000 or 10,000 will last for a good decade, and a waterproofness of 5,000 is sufficient, provided you don't sit on a platform or on a boat in rainy weather.
Another very important aspect is to choose high-waisted trousers, also known as suspenders. This gives a lot of extra warmth and the bare back is rarely useful. If you are of a non-standard build, it is better to buy these trousers in person rather than online, as it is difficult for larger fishermen to fit over their stomachs and it is important to choose the right size.
Membrane trousers without insulation are used in all three of the remaining seasons. Their main purpose is to protect the angler from rain and wind. In this case, waterproofing is already very important. This is especially important if you fish sitting down, e.g. fishing from a boat or fishing from a chair or platform. The weakest point is the back of the trousers, as it rubs against the seat or bench and is three times less likely to get soaked than places where it just rains. This is because it is not only the membrane that holds the water in, but also what is known as the laminate. A good impregnated laminate will bounce water droplets off most of it and water just doesn't soak in, but if you sit down it's different. The moisture will simply be pushed into the membrane by force. Unless the trousers you choose have serious reinforcement on the butt, you need to choose a 20,000mm waterproof trouser to stay dry. Such a membrane will also protect against water being pushed through, but the cost of such a membrane is quite high and some manufacturers are addressing the problem by reinforcing the back of the trousers with an additional layer of membrane or simply with an impermeable material that has no membrane at all, but is simply a complete waterproofing. And this is probably the best solution, because the moisture is evaporated through other areas.
Summer fishing trousers are the most common use for sun protection. They may have UV protection, but it is not as necessary for trousers as it is for t-shirts. They are usually just light-coloured stretchy trousers that dry quickly. They are a must, especially if you fish sitting down, because sitting down with short shorts can cause you to skin your knees without even thinking about it.
Special lightweight summer clothing is now available to protect against mosquito bites. These are special, very dense, stretchy and strong synthetics that are very difficult for a mosquito to get its sting through. Such clothing does work, but admittedly, it is much less effective at evaporating sweat. So they are not very suitable for active leisure activities if you move around a lot. However, for sedentary fishing when mosquitoes attack, it is a very valuable garment.
