A pelagic rod is a rod designed for fishing in the middle layer of the water with live sonar for pike or sturgeon.

The production of such rods has only recently been introduced, as this type of fishing has only become popular since the introduction and popularity of live sonar in around 2022.

Does a pelagic rod have to be a casting rod?

Not necessarily. A casting rod is the best fishing rod for baits up to 18cm in size, but it is easier to hit the cast with a casting rod because we can easily use our finger to stop the distance and speed of the bait. The casting rod can also be used to slow down the downward speed of the lure.

Which pelagic rod should I choose?

A pelagic rod is usually around 210-230cm long and the power should be chosen according to the size of the lure. However, very slender rods should not be chosen. The most popular are rods up to 70g test. It is also desirable to have a fast action with a strong rod body to give a good bite to the fish. The handle is more comfortable when it is considerably shorter than a bigbait rod but slightly longer than a twitching rod.

The most popular pelagic casting rods in Lithuania are Tailwalk Fullrange series, Shimano Yasei. Savage Gear SG6 Alpha. In the spinning versions, the Golden Catch Inquisitor Monster has taken the lead, as well as the popular Shimano Yasei and Savage Gear SG4 rods.
