Fixed Floats
Fixed floats, also known as current floats, are attached to the boat by thin rubber bands (mats), which press the boat against the float shank. They may be attached by two or one mat on the lower stem and the line is additionally threaded through a loop or pushed through the body of the float itself. If the fishermen are fishing in the current in the so-called 'colony', where they stand shoulder to shoulder, the very top of the float is also attached to the float by means of a rubber band. A float attached in this way is much less likely to hang on to a neighbour's boat. Fixed floats are designed for shallow depths and are not suitable for fishing at greater depths because the length of the rod is insufficient for the depth.
When and which current float is best?
The classic current floats are fixed, usually in the shape of an inverted droplet. They can be designed to be loaded with both 0.3g and 15g, depending on what and how you are going to fish. However, the shape of the body itself does not necessarily have to be drop-shaped. Round-bodied floats are very popular when fishing in stronger flows, while elongated floats with a very thick and pronounced tip are used when fishing at greater distances.
Want to fish for roach in the river? Choose a float of 0.5-1.5g, depending on the strength of the current. With a sensitive, light float, the fishermen can see the bite better and the fish feel less resistance and are more daring to bite.
Looking for a float for pikeperch? 5-8g floats in more natural colours are best for this, so that wary fish are less frightened of them. Sometimes fishermen use special transparent bulbous floats that are filled with water, can be cast far and are low visibility. However, their popularity has declined in recent times because they are very loud and difficult to see for the fisherman.
A different float for the current
Current floats can also be carved out of foam. Such an elongated spindle-shaped jet float is made specifically for gillnet fishing. It comes in weights of 5-12g. They are very popular with Žemaitija gillnet fishermen.
The cost of the floats is low. Their price ranges from one to several euros. The cheapest floats are made of eva material, the most expensive of balsa wood. Here you can buy a wide range of floats for all occasions at really good prices.
