Wagler/slider
Sliding floats
Floats are designed for fishing in still water at various depths. They are usually attached at a single point, i.e. at the bottom of the float by a loop. The line is threaded through the eyelet and when the float is cast, the line and the whole hook and line system slides easily downwards until it is stopped by a special silicone brake or thread knot. The brake can be set to allow the lure to descend to any depth.
Sliding floats come in several types and uses. Some are designed for very long casts and are called Wagler floats. They are normally long and have an extra weight attached at the bottom. The price of a quality waggler float is really quite high compared to other floats. You can find such floats on the internet for 20eur, but we really don't recommend spending money on such floats, it's better to have a few cheaper floats of different weights, because the float doesn't last very long. It can break and break.
Floats are not only used when the fishing is deep or very far. They are very useful when you need to cast the bait to the other side of the bay near the grass. During the casting process, the float descends to the mat weight, leaving a relatively short free line with the hook. It is much easier to cast this system as close to the grass line as possible. When fishing with a fixed float at 0.8m depth, the whole system will be 0.8-0.9m long, and if you want to lay the float close to the grasses, the hook will get caught on the grasses during the cast and you will have to recast the float and scare the fish.
When fishing with a float, fishermen often have the problem that the silicone drag is very tight on the small rings of the match rod when casting, and that if a very small silicone drag is applied, it will go through the float eyelet. One little trick helps here - just take and squeeze the float loop with the back of your hand, and you can use the longest and thinnest of the brakes, which will easily go through all the rings. You can also use a yarn brake, just don't cut the loose ends of the yarn too much, they need to be quite long.
If you are fishing in the dark, there is now no need to look for floats with built-in chemical lights, there are excellent illuminated floats with led lights.
