Umbrellas, shelters, tents

As well as the right clothing, an umbrella, shelter or fishing tent can protect you from bad weather. You need protection from rain, strong winds and the hot sun.

Fishing tent

Fishing tents are mainly used for carp or ice fishing. Tents are also used by picnickers who go fishing for a few days on the bank of a body of water. Picnickers or carp anglers use large standard tents to provide a comfortable place to sleep.
For a tent pitched on ice, the requirements are different. Winter tents need to be high, as they will be standing and sitting, and easy to pitch, as they are pitched in harsh conditions and for shorter fishing trips. Often the tent is only used for a few hours of fishing and you do not want to spend half the time setting up and taking down the tent. The most popular winter fishing tents are called cubes. A cube tent is cube-shaped and can be erected very quickly. The three walls and the roof of such a tent are on the principle of a retractable rainfly. Each wall has four extendable poles. One side is left for the door. It can be simply zipped up or with a retractable canopy. Such tents are normally supplied without a bottom, but special bottom covers are now available for such tents.

The winter cube tent is now also available with insulated walls. Such tents are slowly taking over from simple single layer tents. They retain the heat inside much better and with a small stove it is possible to warm up the tent very quickly and efficiently and fish in maximum comfort.
When choosing a winter tent, it is very important to make sure that the roof of the tent, and preferably also the walls, are of a light colour. This makes a big difference in whether it is pleasantly light or dusk inside. Winter tent cubes come in different sizes: from 160cm x 160cm x 180h to 225cm x 225cm x 240h. The size of the tent should be chosen according to the number of fishermen who are going to fish at the same time. For two fishermen, a 180cm x 180cm tent is sufficient, while for three fishermen, a 220cm x 220cm tent is sufficient. Also, do not be fooled into choosing a tent lower than 180cm. Height is as important as width.

There are also very economical pyramid-shaped winter tents that are designed to be self-erecting when removed from the case. They are designed for one angler, are very light and take up very little space. However, putting them back in the tray is a challenge and it is better to learn how to do it before fishing.

Fishing umbrellas

Fishing umbrellas are used to protect against wind or rain as well as against the sun. Umbrellas come with walls, also known as shelters, are simple, and there are also multifunctional umbrellas that can stand upright, can be angled and have one side of the umbrella staked to the ground. This type of umbrella is the most popular amongst feeder fishermen, as it can be positioned to protect against rain or cross winds.

Umbrellas are available in different sizes. The smallest are two metres in diameter, the largest 3 metres. The most popular umbrellas are 2,5 metres in diameter, but more and more fishermen are opting for 3 metre umbrellas, which are starting to be produced by more and more companies. One of these is Nytro, whose umbrellas have a very good price-performance ratio. When it comes to the quality of the umbrellas, the cords of the umbrella are the key element. If the cords are thin metal, they will not withstand strong winds and will not last very long. Thicker metal cords are a much more serious choice, but the best cords are still fibreglass. Such a rainfly, or rather its cords, are virtually impossible to break in the wind and will last a very long time. The Nytro Space Creator umbrellas are available with just such cords. They also have a bendable shaft angle and can be used to build a shelter by pinning one side of the umbrella to the ground. Despite the fact that the price of such umbrellas is double that of ordinary umbrellas, they will last much longer than double.

Fishing umbrellas are usually round, but squares are also available. Semi-circular umbrellas with one corner cut are also available for feeder fishing. Such umbrellas are designed to make it more comfortable to cast when sitting on a chair or a platform with the umbrella on the left side.
